The History of Reese’s
The Hershey Company’s origins trace back to the 1880s, when Milton S. Hershey founded the Lancaster Caramel Company in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. In 1894 he started a chocolate company that had various confections. In 1900 he sold the Caramel Company so he could focus on milk chocolate bars. He was quickly successful and started a new factory in Derry Township, Pennsylvania that eventually became the world’s largest chocolate-manufacturing plant. Meanwhile, an unincorporated community called Hershey developed around the factory. By 1908 The Hershey Chocolate Company was incorporated and by 1927 became a publicly traded company. The company quickly expanded its line from the original Hershey’s Milk Chocolate bar. Kisses were introduced in 1907, Milk Chocolate with Almonds in 1908. Mr. Goodbar and Hershey’s chocolate syrup in 1925. Krackel in 1938. So where did Reese’s land in this timeline?
In the early 1920s, H.B. Reese, an employee of The Hershey Company, started making candy in the basement of his Hershey home. When Reese created Peanut Butter Cups as a part of an assortment of candies in 1928, it quickly became a fan favorite and his bestselling item. He used Hershey chocolate supplied by the Hershey Company and maintained a close relationship with the company. In 1963, the business was sold to The Hershey Company.
After Hershey acquired Reese’s, that’s when you really start to see a more diverse pallet of candy and candy bars.

1988: Cadbury Creme Egg, Almond Joy, Mounds, York Peppermint Pattie.

Today, you can get so many different varieties of Reese’s. There is the Reese’s Big Cup with Potato Chips, Reese’s Crunchy Cookie Big Cup, Reese’s Crunchy Peanut, Reese’s Fast Break, Reese’s Snack Cakes, Reese’s Peanut Butter Bar, and the list goes on.
