The History of the Oreo

The first Oreo cookie was produced in 1912 at the Chelsea Market in Manhattan. As everyone knows, an Oreo is basically a sandwich cookie made from two chocolate cookies sandwiching a disc of vanilla frosting.  The origin for the name is not really known. It was first registered as Oreo Biscuits in 1913. In 1921 the name changed to Oreo Sandwich. A few years later it became Oreo Creme Sandwich. In 1974  it became the Oreo Chocolate Sandwich Cookie.

Oreos are actually a knock off. Hydrox cookies were already on the market. They were introduced in 1908 as two chocolate shortbread cookies with a vanilla fondant center. These cookies had a scalloped edge and a design on the top of the cookie. Oreos and Hydrox are supposed to be very similar and Hydrox cookies are still sold today. They are also a kosher cookie.

A quick timeline lets us know that…

1974 - Double Stuf was introduced.

1991 Spooky Oreos with the orange creme were introduced.

1992 - Oreo Minis were introduced.

2013 - Oreo Mega Stuf was introduced

2019 - Most Stuf was introduced

The 2010s is when Oreo started releasing limited edition runs on their flavors.

Oreos Limited edition flavors that are currently on the market include:

  • Chocolate Hazelnut

  • Java Chip

  • Mint

  • Birthday cake

  • Chocolate

  • Dark chocolate

  • Peanut butter pie

  • Peanut butter

  • Carrot cake

  • Chocolate marshmallow

  • Caramel Coconut

  • Oreo Golden Lemon

Oreo is the best-selling cookie of the 20th century. Approximately 34 billion Oreo Cookies are sold each year, 92 million cookies per day - with 10 billion of those cookies sold in the U.S. annually. An estimated 500 billion Oreo Cookies have been sold since the Oreo biscuit was introduced.

Based on consumer demand, the classic Oreo is the best selling. Among the many Oreo varieties, the favorite Oreo flavor is Oreo Chocolate Creme, closely followed by the Most Stuf. Double Stuf was in 4th place, Thins in 5th, Mint in 6th, and Golden in 7th.
