The History of Andes Candies
The delicious tale of Andes Mints starts in 1921 with Andrew Kanelos, who opened his very first candy store, Andy’s Candies in Chicago. Andy made many different types of chocolates, boxed them up and sold them to the public. However, he quickly realized that even if you do sell the most delicious chocolates in Chicago, men didn’t want to give their women a box of candy with another man’s name on it. How to fix this crazy dilemma? He simply changed the spelling of Andy’s to Andes and included a picture of mountains on the wrapper. The branding change was so successful, future advertising campaigns would declare these chocolates to be “The Peak of All Candies.”
The famous Creme de Menthe Thins that make mouths water and stomachs rumble would not be introduced until 1950. These candies were among the first individually wrapped mints and were offered at cash registers, retailing anywhere between $.01 - $.05. The goal was for them to be priced equivalent to the customer’s change after a transaction, making them an easy sell.
With over 100 retail Andes Candies locations and the untouchable, delectable Andes Creme De Menthe taking off, Andes Candies went from a chain of candy stores to a manufacturing giant across the nation.
