The History of Dip
If you love chips and dip, then mark your calendars. March 23rd is National Chip and Dip Day. This day celebrates the combination of delicious, salty chips with creamy flavored dips. And the great thing about dips is that there is a combination of flavors and textures out there for everybody. If you like sour cream based dips, there is an abundance to choose from. If you like quac or hummus, you have plenty of options too. And that is because people have been dipping their food for centuries. In fact, hummus-like recipes date back to the 13 century. One of the earliest dips was a Greek dip, which was a combination of yogurt, cucumbers, garlic, salt, and olive oil. It was eaten with meats and bread, since chips were not around until the mid-19th century.
Sour cream, the base for many dips, was invented in the U.S. between 18-15 and 1825. And when potato chips were invented in 1853 by a cook named George Crum, it was like a match made in heaven.
Today when a lot of people in America think of dips, they probably think of potlucks, finger foods, and of course, the Super Bowl. A survey was conducted with people all across the united states to determine which dips were the most popular to consume for the super bowl, and which states voted for which dip. There were 6 dips that were found to be the most popular. Here are the results.
6th: Ranch Dressing. Ranch dressing is kind of a midwesterner joke. We like our ranch. And the results confirmed that. 1 state in the U.S. voted this as their preferred dip, and that state was Iowa.
5th: Blue Cheese Dressing came in 5th. Of course, during an event where a ton of wings are consumed, this logically made it’s way onto the list. 6 states voted this as the best.
