The History of Lunchables

What do you do when the sale of bologna is down, and despite having a great catchy theme song of its very own, sales continue to drop? This was the dilemma if Oscar Mayer in the 1980s. And this is one issue Oscar Mayer knew they had to fix. But along with that, they wanted to come up with a product that would take the hassle of making school lunches off the shoulders of mom’s everywhere, while giving kids something cool.

So in 1988, in Seattle, Washington, Lunchables were released. The OG Lunchables were pre-packaged meals consisting of lunch meats, cheese, and crackers. They even originally came with a little napkin, which was quoted by the CEO as “the most healthy item in the Lunchable.” The design of the container was based off of the American TV dinner.

They were an immediate hit and would launch nationwide the following year.

Lunchables, while quick and loved by many kids and adults alike, are actually a pretty horrible product filled with preservatives and other things we probably shouldn’t be eating. Even Oscar Mayer has admitted that these should not be a daily food.

Today you can get varieties such as…

  • Crispy Grilled Cheesies

  • Chicken Dunks

  • Extra Cheesy Pizza

  • Ham and American, cheddar or swiss

  • Nachos

  • Peperoni and Mozzarella
