The History of Eggo
The story of Eggo waffles. You may be expecting me to talk about hot fluffy waffles, made from scratch, covered in a sweet delicious maple syrup. You may be expecting me to say that the inventors, brothers Frank, Anthony, and Sam Dorsa of San Jose, always knew that waffles would be their calling. Well, you would be wrong. In 1932, three brothers from San Jose did join forces on a culinary delight. However, what they created was mayonnaise.
Yep folks, mayonnaise.
But they were successful locally. Their “100% fresh ranch eggs” and “triple refined vegetable oil” helped give their product a unique and desired quality, and they were able to make sales. With this success, they decided to branch out. So which product would these brothers decide to dip their toes in - so to speak?
Yep. This time it would be waffles. Frank Dorsa had a dream of finding ways to make things easier for people, and that lead them to making a waffle mix that restaurants could use to easily make delicious waffles for their customers.
In the 1950s however, frozen food was where it was at, and Doras knew he had to come up with a frozen version of his waffles. In 1953, Frank devised a giant rotating contraption equipped with waffle irons. As the waffles cooked, the wheel rotated and could be flipped at precisely the right time by employees strategically placed around the wheel. Soon the company was able to produce thousands of waffles an hour. These waffles were then flash frozen, packaged, and sent to consumers. These frozen waffles however, did not have the name Eggo, not yet anyway. Initially they were called Froffles - a combination of frozen and waffle. In 1955 they were officially changed to Eggo Waffles. And in the 1970s, Kellogg acquired the brand and things really took off. And now you could say they are a household name.
