The History of Hot Pockets
Hot Pockets have been around since 1980. Invented by Jewish Iranian brothers Paul and David Merage, the brothers had a dream of creating a portable sandwich which would have crispy dough after being microwaved. After immigrating to the United States, the brothers founded Chef America Inc and set out to make their dream come true. When this creation was introduced, it was actually called the Tastywich. But after some tweaking to the recipe, they renamed them to Hot Pockets and they officially hit the store shelves.
So what is the secret to a crispy dough from the microwave?
The Hot Pocket Sleeve.
The gray surface inside the sleeve is a susceptor, or a film that takes the waves being pushed out by the microwave and captures them, turning the sleeve into a tiny broiler. Now of course, if you are not in a hurry, you could just pop them into the oven.
Now looking into their website, it looks like they have ditched the sleeve. But they have instructions on their website how to cook each kind with the sleeve, without the sleeve, and in the air fryer.
By 2002, the company was bought out by Nestle for 2.6 billion dollars.
