The History of Hi-Chew

Hi-Chew founder Taichiro Morinaga was born on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu in 1865. His father died when he was only seven and he grew up with very little and without formal education. At the age of 23, he decided to seek out his destiny in America. Upon his arrival, a stranger offered him a piece of candy, something he never had growing up impoverished. At that moment he decided to learn how to make candy. He started to hone his skills and in 1899, 11 years later, he decided to move back to his home and sell candy from a push cart. His sweets were such a hit he was able to open a store in Tokyo, The Morinaga Western Confectionery Shop. By 1918 the company would become the first modern candy company in Japan and first to produce chocolates.

After years of production, Morinaga was always trying to come up with new products. In 1956 he introduced the predecessor of Hi-Chew, Chewlets. These strawberry flavored morsels could be chewed like gum, but would dissolved as you chewed them, so you wouldn’t have to be rude and spit out your gum. By 1975 these became Hi-Chew and are sold all around the world.
