The History of Chick-Fil-A
Let me take you back. Back to a time when diners were all the rage, Howdy Doody would hit the airwaves, Slinky was the best toy, and the Beatles were coming on the scene. Yes, the 40s.
In 1946, Samuel Truett Cathy and his brother Ben opened a small 24-hour diner in Hapeville, Georgia, called the Dwarf Grill. This diner was located across from a Ford Motor Company assembly plant, which was a great way to lure in customers.
The business grew steadily, and more locations were opened around the Atlanta area. So what would be next? Samuel decided he wanted to perfect the boneless chicken sandwich. Experimenting started and he soon discovered the best way to cook them was with a pressure cooker. Next, the seasonings. Experimentations continued, with a whole diner of customers willing to get the food a try and report back. Finally in 1964, the perfect mix of seasonings happened, and the original chicken sandwich was born. And guess what? This was the first ever fried chicken breast sandwich.
This delicious sandwich soon started outselling the burgers and everything else on the menu. With the popularity being so huge, Samuel decided he better get it trademarked. And if you are going to have a trademarked sandwich, you better have a restaurant that featured that perfected sandwich. Hence, Chick-Fil-A was born in 1967. The first location was in Atlanta’s Greenbriar Mall.
So where did the name come from? Well, it is a take on “chicken fillet”. They capitalized the A at the end to symbolize the top quality food.
Today there are over 3000 locations across the United States, with Texas leading the way with 503 locations, followed by Georgia with 266, and Florida with 263.
