Lay's Limited Edition Chips!

This is a mini-ish Quest.... we have three different Limited Edition chips to try... join us!

Potato Chips. Yum. I am definitely one of those who loves salty snacks over sweet. And potato chips are near the top of my list. Personally, the original Lay’s are within my top three. I like a classic. But I am not afraid to try something new. So when I saw these limited edition Lay’s, I had to grab them.

Today’s episode is not quite mini, it is not quite full sized. So I will call it a mini-ish episode. We have three chips to try. We will rate each one individually with a pass or fail grade. And the chips we are rating are…

  • Lay’s Cheetos Cheese Flavored Cheetos

  • Lay’s Doritos Cool Ranch Flavored Doritos

  • Lay’s Wavy Funyuns Onion Flavored Funyuns Onion Flavored Rings

A History of Lay’s Potato Chips

I got a rich, rich history lesson from Lay's website. In their About Us section, it states,

“Wherever celebrations and good times happen, the Lay’s brand will be there just as it has been for more than 75 years. With flavors almost as rich as our history, we have a chip or crisp flavor guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.”

And that my friends is the history of Lay’s, according to their website.

So obviously, I had to go dig for their 75 year rich history. And what I found was a handful of sites that jumbled together a bunch of facts and it was difficult to put something really solid together. So this is going to remain short.

Our history lesson takes us back to 1932 where we meet up with Lay’s founder, Herman W. Lay. Mr. Herman opened a company that made various snack foods in Nashville, Tennessee, and soon after purchased another business that made potato chips, called Barrett Food Company. Mr. Lay, while working as a traveling salesman, would sell potato chips out of the trunk of his car in the hopes to get more people to try out the chips. Soon he would turn to national advertising, becoming one of the first-ever snack food brands to advertise on TV,  and the chip took off.

Today there are over 200 varieties that have been created and the flavors vary from country to country. Common flavors such as salt and vinegar, barbecue, and cheddar are found in the chip aisle, but you can also find flavors such as cappuccino, vegetable soup, and beer ‘n brats.
