A History of Lay’s

Our history lesson takes us back to 1932 where we meet up with Lay’s founder, Herman W. Lay. Mr. Herman opened a company that made various snack foods in Nashville, Tennessee, and soon after, purchased another business that made potato chips, called Barrett Food Company. Mr. Lay, while working as a traveling salesman, would sell potato chips out of the trunk of his car in the hopes to get more people to try out the chips. Soon he would turn to national advertising, becoming one of the first-ever snack food brands to advertise on TV,  and the chip took off.

Today there are over 200 varieties that have been created and the flavors vary from country to country. Common flavors such as salt and vinegar, barbecue, and cheddar are found in the chip aisle, but you can also find flavors such as cappuccino, vegetable soup, and beer ‘n brats.
