The History of Sugar Wafers
The wafer has been around for centuries, the first cookie recorded to be available on the streets of Paris as early as the 14th century. Though with the first waffle iron discovered in Western Europe in the 9th Century, the Wafer was surely around much longer. In 1890s, Josef Manner manufactured the first hazelnut cream-filled wafer sandwich, layering five of the the crisp, thin, sweet, dry, and flat biscuit with four layers of filling.
Wafers are enjoyed all over the world. They come in different shapes, sizes, and even prepared for different purposes. Christmas Wafers are biscuits that are created with patterns that depict different religious scenes, popular during Christmas for many European families. In Poland, Slovakia, Lithuania, and Italy, the Christmas Wafers are served during the Christmas Eve Vigil. In Mexico, Venezuela, El Salvador, Ecuador, and Colombia, the Oblea (Ah-Blee-uh) wafer is a cookie enjoyed as a dessert served with milk caramel in the middle. And popular in Egypt is the Freska, popular in the summertime, and filled with honey syrup.
