The History of Pumpkin Spice
What is pumpkin spice? Pumpkin spice is a mixture of nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger and cloves. These spices have been around for centuries and are not new to the human diet. These spices are native to Southeast Asian islands some that are part of Indonesia. These islands have been known as the Spice Islands and were taken control by the Dutch and the Dutch East India Company. These mixed spices made their way to the New World in 1796, as evidenced by the first known cookbook to be written by an American, American Cookery by Amelia Simmons. The book included a pumpkin pie recipe.
McCormick, the world’s largest spice seller, introduced the “pumpkin pie spice” to America in 1934. This spice came as a direct response to the invention of pureed canned pumpkin.
Today pumpkin spice is used for everything. From adding it to your buttered toast, to your coffee, to applesauce, and even many savory dishes. Don’t forget about cinnamon rolls, apple pies, cookies, and other baked goods.
The Food Network released a list of all the products you can get in 2022 that are pumpkin spice, which I have added to the show notes. But a few of them include…
Pumpkin Cheesecake Ice Cream
Pumpkin Spice Popcorn
Pumpkin Spice creamers, coffees, and milks
Pumpkin Spice cinnamon rolls, cookies, breads, and cake mixes
Pumpkin spiced almonds
Pumpkin Spiced Ramen Noodles
