Goldfish Crackers. Open any cupboard in America and I bet you find them. Scratch that. Open any mini van sliding door and I bet you find them embedded into the carpets, shoved into the cup holders, and seeping from the upholstery. I bet shop vacs across America are filled with the dust of bygone cheddar fish. Seriously. Any takers?

On today’s exclusive mini episode, we are trying out the new Goldfish Mega Bites Cheddar Jalapeno Crackers. If you like jalapeno, maybe this is a great time to run out to the store and snag a bag to try along with is. And then, let us know what you think of our analysis in the comments.

A History of Pepperidge Farm

Pepperidge Farm was started by Margaret Rudkin. The mother of three boys, her youngest suffered from severe allergies and asthma. His condition made him unable to eat most commercially processed foods. After switching his diet to mostly fruits and veggies, she decided to try to bake some all-natural stone ground whole wheat bread with vitamins and nutrients intact. After some trial and error, Margaret’s bread turned out amazing. Her son loved it and it helped his health so much that his doctor started prescribing it to his other patients. Margaret decided to reach out to the local grocer next to see if they would sell her bread. After trying a piece, the grocer bought all the bread on the spot to sell at 25cents a loaf, 15 cents higher than the other breads in the store. That was the start of Pepperidge Farm.

Years later, in 1961, Campbell Soup Company acquired Pepperidge Farm. In 1962, Margaret traveled to Switzerland where she discovered the Goldfish cracker, returning to the United States with the recipe. The first five flavors of Goldfish that were launched were Lightly Salted (Original), Cheese, Barbecue, Pizza, and Smoky. The Cheddar Cheese flavor wasn’t introduced until 1966. Today, the flavors include…

  • Cheddar

  • Parmesan

  • Pizza

  • Pretzel

  • Slammin’ Sour Cream and Onion

  • Burstin’ BBQ

  • Blasted Nacho

  • Wild White Cheddar

  • Xplosive Pizza

  • Xtra Cheddar

  • Cookies & Cream

  • Vanilla Cupcake

  • Fudge Brownie

  • S’mores

And finally, Willard, Ohio is the Goldfish capital of the world. The bakery in Willard, a small town of 6,000, can produce more than 50 million Goldfish crackers a day.
